The Eagle boys tennis team started their week with a win against Corning and ended it with a win against Anderson.

West Valley traveled south to Cardinal territory to play Corning. It was an overcast and chilly afternoon, according to Tom Wyrick, West Valley's tennis coach.

The Eagles went down in the first two matches. Eagle Bryan Shafer fell to Ryan Howell 0-6, 4-6 and teammate Kyle Marlatt lost to Cardinal Jake Schlereth 2-6, 7-5. West Valley was able to turn around in their final four matches and beat Corning. Then in doubles, the Eagles took three of their four matches for a 6-3 victory over the Cardinals.

West Valley moved on to play Oroville at home. It was sunny with a slight breeze when the Eagles played their opponents in Cottonwood.

After six individual matches the Eagles and the Tigers were tied at 3-love coming down to the three doubles matches for the win. The Eagles would win only one doubles match, the Tigers pouncing for a 5-4 non-league win.

West Valley's Bryan Shafer, Jordan Burke and Christian Dax won their individual matches, and Christian Dax and David Fife won their doubles match.

The Eagles would finish their first week of play by traveling to Anderson Thursday afternoon. The weather was good for tennis, clear skies and slightly breezy.

There was tough play by both teams, but in the end the Eagles would sweep the meet 9-0.

Bryan Shafer took his match against Mo Hursey of Anderson 6-2, 6-1. Eagle teammate Kyle Marlatt beat opponent Emannuel Alcazar 6-2, 6-4. West Valley's Jordan Burke and Christian Dax both swept their matches 6-0, 6-0.

Robert Sperou and David Fife also won their matches against Anderson.

According to Wyrick, the team had a good first week. The Eagles are 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the NAL.

New Tech

Anderson New Tech High School is 1-1 in their boys and girls tennis season so far.

The young tennis players were unsuccessful against Etna, losing all of their matches. Both the boys and girls had five singles games. The boys played three doubles games and the girls played two doubles games.

New Tech moved on to play Providence Christian, who only has one player on their team this season.

Bryan Barnes played Daniel Field of Providence and won 10-3 for New Tech.

Barnes, Nolan Brace, Andrew Carney, Tyler Held, Kyle Jarell, and Jacob Sherman make up the boys team for New Tech. Nicholle Barnes, Katie Carlson, Nina Galvan, Morgan Malak and Emily Zalesny make up the girls team.
