You can blame the recession for the creation of Kaleidoscope Coffee.
“I tried to think about a business that people would still frequent even when times are tough,” said co-owner Dan Burton whose job as a construction supervisor was slowing down in 2010. “Coffee is the one thing in life that people will always spend money on.”
And so began Kaleidoscope Coffee on North Street.
Burton did much of the construction work on the drive-thru coffee shop himself. He completed the building in October of 2010.
“Business gets better every single month,” he admitted with a smile.
He credits a large portion of his success to the coffee they sell. He brews Stawhouse Coffee which is certified organic and acquired through fair-trade.
“We have such a good product, everyone asks when we’re going to expand,” said Burton. “We have people who drive down from Redding to buy our product.”
They have no plans to expand at the moment, however.
Both Burtons grew up in Redding. In fact, they graduated from Enterprise High School together.
“We reconnected in August 2010,” said Dan.
2010 was a big year, although Dan’s wife, Mimi, said it was an easy transition from her job working for Costco, to co-owning Kaleidoscope. She hails from a family of business owners so she’s familiar with what it’s like to make ends meet.
“Trying to make things work can be a stress,” admitted husband, Dan.
But they both agree their customers make it all worthwhile. In fact, they do what they can to give back by holding local fundraisers whenever possible.
“I miss my customers when I don’t see them,” Mimi said.
“We’ve become good friends with some of them,” added Dan.
Hours vary at the store. Monday through Thursday they’re open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Friday, they’re open a little later, closing at 9 p.m. Weekends they are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and on Sunday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“We’re focusing on this store right now,” said Burton.
So if you’re looking for a good cup of Joe, one that features a certified organic product, and whose coffee is decaffeinated through the use of Swiss water (no chemicals!), you need look no further than Kaleidoscope Coffee. They were the 2010 Anderson Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year.
“We’d like to thank our customers,” said Dan. “We recognize it’s hard times and we appreciate your loyalty.”
It’s easy to see why they’re a community favorite.
