West Valley girls hoops buries Miners 47-29

Friday night’s storm had little effect on the girls basketball game at West Valley.

The Eagles took an early lead, scoring twice before the Minors were able to put up two points of their own.

West Valley’s fast pace offense was no match for Yreka’s defense. The Eagles had a 10-point run before the Minors blocked a shot, got the rebound and ran it down the court for two.

By the end of the first quarter, West Valley led 15-6. The second quarter wasn’t much better for Yreka, going into the half West Valley led 30-7.

“Despite turning the ball over many more times than our average, we are looking at it as a learning experience,” said Coach Julie White. “We haven’t been in very many situations where we have had a big lead early and had to maintain that throughout the course of the game.”

Eagle sophomore Aubrey Mendonca put up a career high 23 points in the contest. Nine of West Valley’s 11 players scored in the game.

“It was pleasing to get another league win and taking one positive step toward our ultimate goal of a league championship, and for every member of the team to have made a contribution, whether it be offensively or defesively,” White said.

“Senior Morgan Gray played a solid game and played some big minutes, and Aubrey Mendonca had a career high in points (23), many of which came out of transition due to blocking out (always stressed because we are shorter than most opponents), getting a quick outlet, and some unselfish passing.”

Shelby Weekley nailed two three-pointers in the fourth quarter, while Taylor Ross had 11 rebounds in the win.

West Valley is 2-0 in NAL play and 11-5 overall.

The Eagles played Mount Shasta on Tuesday in a non-league match up. West Valley will host Central Valley on Friday. Game starts at 6 p.m.
