A car chase that reached speeds of 100 mph kept local law enforcement busy on Sunday, Jan. 29. According to a news release issued by the Shasta County Sheriff’s office, the chase began at the intersection of Fig Tree Lane and Sky Way in Redding. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Chase Courtright, 24, had failed to yield after an officer spotted a 1997 Audi with no license plates.

“A pursuit ensued,” said Sgt. John Greene of the Shasta County Sheriff’s office via the release.

That pursuit took officers along Deschutes Road and then east bound on Hwy. 44, said the release.

“The preliminary investigation revealed the vehicle was an unreported stolen vehicle from the Redding area,” said Sgt. Greene. “The driver, Courtright, was arrested and booked into the Shasta County Jail for felony evading, possession of a stolen vehicle, numerous arrest warrants and a parole hold.”

Another passenger, Kevin Smith, 28, was interviewed and released. A second passenger, Robert Pasillas, 21, fled on foot and into a heavily wooded area.

“And extensive search of the area was conducted with the assistance of the California Highway Patrol, Redding Police Department, and the Anderson Police Department,” said Greene.

According to the news release, Pasillas was taken into custody without incident after he contacted a local resident for help. That resident was able to keep Pasillas contained until Sheriff’s deputies arrived.

Pasillas was arrested on outstanding warrants and booked into the Shasta County Jail.
