West Valley’s game against Mount Shasta on Tuesday proved to be redeeming for the team, after the Eagles game against Yreka the Friday before, said Coach Julie White.

“We got the chance to redeem our second half performance from last Friday, with a halftime score of 31-7. On Friday (Jan. 20), the score at the half was 30-7, and we came out flat in the second half.”

White said the team maintained the intensity they had in the first half into the second, saying that it was a big improvement.

“All 10 players who played scored, and played good team defense,” White stated. “Our inside-out game was much improved; as was our passing in general. I am proud of the way our team responded and played together as a team, despite not playing with Aubrey Mendonca.”

White said Mendonca was resting a sore knee.

“Senior Kendall Vincent has taken her defensive game to a new level, and Captain Marleigh Ostrom lead by example,” said White.

West Valley’s Shelby Weekley led the team in scoring with nine points. Ostrom and Paige Burson scored eight apiece.

Anderson 53, Corning 32

The Corning girls played a tough first half, leading by two going into the half; however, Anderson came back with strong defense in the second half, keeping the Cardinals from racking up the points.

“It is a big win for us on the road,” said Coach Keith Krantz. “Corning is a tough team. They have either led with a minute left in the fourth or lost by two their last few games.”

According to Krantz, the Cubs outscored their opponents 33-10 in the second half. He added that the defensive intensity went up in the second half.

“It was definitely a team effort. We are dealing with some injuries and pulled up two freshman players, who needed to get up to speed,” said Krantz.

Anderson freshman Katie Nunnelley put up 20 points and went 9-for-16. Fallon Greenhaw added 11 points, Brie Wilson had nine points and seven rebounds and Celena Ragsdale finished with seven points and six rebounds.
